Reasons for infertility

"A disease of the reproductive system defined by the absence of clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected intercourse" (WHO)

In Western Europe, around 12-15% of couples remain unintentionally childless. Often the cause lies with both parts of the couple. There are many reasons for infertility. These include hormonal disorders, organic disorders such as adhesions, tumors, endometriosis, immunological disorders, ect. In women, the cause may be related to age. The average age of women giving birth to their first child in Switzerland is almost 33 years. The trend is rising.

In men, the cause for infertility is about 39%. Studies show that sperm count as decreased vom 1973-2011 by 50-60%.

 

The reason for poor sperm quality or lack of sperm are due to illness, lifestyle or environmental toxins, among other things.  

 

The following lifestyles can support infertility of men and woman:

  • Being overweight (BMI>35) lowers the fertility rate twice

  • Underweight lowers fourfold

  • Alcohol (more than 2 drinks/day) reduces by 60%

  • Smoking (more than 5 cigarettes/day) reduces by 60%

  • Coffee (more than 5 cups/day) reduces by 45%

  • Illegal drugs down by 70%
